Wildebeest, with their large, box-like heads and curving horns, are among sub-Saharan Africa’s most iconic animals. They are perhaps most closely associated with the Serengeti-Mara safari area where they roam in massive herds across the African plains. This sculpture depicts the wildebeest at rest casting a backward glance. The Raku-fired finish perfectly captures the arid, dusty environment of the African savannah. It’s a piece that would provide a dramatic centrepiece in any home.

Raku-fired sculpture is bisque fired in an electric kiln and then heated rapidly to 980C before being immersed in a combustible material, such as sawdust. The glaze melts in the firing, developing a distinctive crackle finish, while the final combustion imparts a smoky matt finish to any unglazed areas. The effect is very natural looking and perfectly captures the raw drama of many wild animals.
